Ibis Mojo Carbon
What would have happened to Ibis if it had continued on without interruption, and how would it be different? If you ask Ibis it would be in the same place it is now, pushing the envelope of technology and what we traditionally think of the bicycle. The Mojo name has a history of innovation and tradition so what better way to bring Ibis back than to bring the Mojo of the company to the hands of the rider.
The Mojo Carbon isn’t just another full suspension sitting in the pool of knock-offs and weak designs. It’s a development marvel from the beginning to end. First, Ibis looked at building the bike from a completely different angle. Instead of designing the bike around the engineering and then the look, they decided to tackle it from beauty first. Ibis brought on designer Roxy Lo to make the frame the most elegant designed bike in the industry. Starting with a clean slate, except for some mounting points, Roxy curved the look of the Mojo to create sweeping lines without interruption.
Once the design was there it was straight to the 1700+ hours of Pro-E CAD time. With the most extensive time put into the areas are around the pivots and the dropouts. When looking closer at the tire clearance, pivots and rear swingarm you can see the difficulty in maintaining beauty with out sacrificing strength, yet somehow they achieved it all. Tom Morgan of IBIS had this to say, “Look closely and you’ll notice how complex the form of the swing arm is. The variable radiuses and compound curves were so intense that the ProE workstations kept crashing as we tried to eek out every millimeter of tire and component clearance while trying to maximize strength and stiffness.” Clearly there were no corners cut in designing and executing.
The All Mountain big travel cross-country bikes are really making a mark on the industry and when you put value, exceptional ride characteristics and beauty all in one package it makes other manufacturers cringe. A typical mountain bike ride for Hans Heim, the CEO of IBIS, is 2 to 3 hours with a lot of climbing and then either fast open descending or lots of technical single track. So Ibis designed the bike to do everything well and keep a good flow on undulating terrain. Hans said, “It has to climb well, I hate sluggish climbing bikes! A bike should give you a little warning before it slides so you have time to react. Also, something that's not too hard on the eyes.” Considering Tom and Hans are both over 6’ tall and over 200lbs, the bike also has to handle the abuse of bigger riders, and the bottom bracket has to withstand the power of a V8 engine. You can guarantee a stiff bottom bracket and an excellent tracking out of the Mojo.
Although the Mojo has cross-country weight everything is over built. It uses a 31.6 seatpost, 34.9 front derailleur and can accept 6” forks. The Mojo handles everything that’s thrown at it and at a mere 5.5lb weight the Mojo can be built to be an all day epic that withstands the abuse of gnarly trails.
